Let’s suspend our disbelief, as the big screen asks us to do, and imagine that Audrey Hepburn—an angelic apparition—is not officially beautiful. In the film, they try to pass her off as an awkward, graceless intellectual, but in the very first scene in which she appears dressed in Givenchy, the oohs and aahs begin. This musical (the “Think Pink!” sequence is unforgettable) contains many more connections to the world of fashion: Fred Astaire drew inspiration from Richard Avedon (whose photographs appear in the opening credits), and Kay Thompson borrowed mannerisms from Diana Vreeland. An absolute classic by that consummate dandy Stanley Donen, perfect for watching (and humming along to) with friends, and carrying a message that still resonates today: the most important things in fashion happen backstage.
