Programme
In his search for original sound, and after exploring Beethoven’s symphonies and Mendelssohn’s world, maestro Savall returns to L’Auditori to bring us one of the fundamental works of German romanticism: A German Requiem, by Johannes Brahms. At a time of growing secularism, Brahms displayed a spirituality that transcended religion, despite the Protestant underpinnings of this splendid symphonic/choral piece. The evening will also feature Song of Destiny (Schicksalslied op. 54), by the same composer. This famous short piece for choir and orchestra, premièred in 1871 and based on a poem by Friedrich Hölderlin, contrasts the joyful fate of celestial beings with the painful and restless fate of humans.
