Some people lead a discreet, contented life, and then there are those born for a technicolor existence. The love story of Alan and Adrianne is larger-than-life; they lived together at Havencrest, a sui generis castle in Illinois. When she passes away, Alan gradually creates a home that sits somewhere between an altar, a sanctuary, and a museum. She is present in every corner: her operatic wardrobe, her murals, her wigs, her treasures. Perhaps this setting is nothing more than a fantasy—but so what? Love and grief take many forms, and aesthetic evocation is one of them. An innocent fairy tale that celebrates the idea of a “soulmate” and transcends any cinematic categorization.
