Programme
The breadth and complexity of the sound of the band ensemble are showcased in a concert that opens majestically with the Grand Fanfare by Venezuelan composer Giancarlo Castro de Addona. This festive piece sets the stage for another contemporary work, created by Luis Serrano Alarcón in 2010, which opens the door to a world of fantasy: Duende. Four preludes for Symphonic Wind Ensemble. The piece offers a beautifully articulated polyptych of different registers, alternating spirited rhythms with unquestionably charming atmospheric recreations by the winds, with the piano eventually taking centre stage.
Frédéric Devreese’s Overture for Large Orchestra, which has been performed on numerous occasions since its creation in 1976, is an example of the compositional tradition for ensembles such as the BMB, which on this occasion will perform under the baton of Yves Segers. Solemn and elegant, the overture unfolds with a kind of musical truth that invites the nuanced emergence of soloist performances. A similar understanding of the orchestra’s possibilities takes on a parodic and ironic twist in Dirk Brossé’s 2021 composition, Für Elise @ the Movies.
