Programme
Symphony No. 7 holds a unique place within Beethoven’s oeuvre. First performed in 1813, Wagner described it as the “apotheosis of dance”, a definition that speaks to its internal driving force: rhythm as a structural and expressive force. From the initial poco sostenuto to the fiery finale, Beethoven constructs a narrative of constant tension, in which repetition and rhythmic variation create a feeling of inexorable progress. We find the sensation of a “fork of destiny”, for example, in the allegretto: processional and sombre, it offers a sober counterpoint before the jubilant dénouement. This “concert tasting” allows listeners to focus on a single masterpiece, revealing its secrets and the persistent modernity of a symphony that, more than two centuries later, continues to convey a primal and infectious energy.
